Background

Wasn't it beautiful, weren't we cool... Oh those days! We used to mix tapes for ourselves, our friends and... for the cutest girls whom we would impress with personalized tapes, full of music they didn't know yet. For hours we would lock ourselves in our rooms, alone with records, 12"-s, singles, a turntable and a tape-deck. A perfect mix of two times 45 minutes, and you will be remembered for ever!

Who does not remember the time 'auto reverse' was introduced? Wow, that was innovation! And innovation lasted: now we have online libraries packed full with a huge range of artists and genres.

Concept

Strangelove (a creative advertising agency based in Amsterdam) had the idea to ask music professionals to make a Mixed-Tape; a very simple idea with a really nice result. Via Spotify or Deezer, we ask music artists, record labels, DJ's and all types of creative like-minded people to put together a unique and personal playlist. Sometimes it can be related to a specific theme / event / launch, or maybe the complete opposite of what one might expect from a certain 'character'.

Spotify / Deezer

You need either Spotify or Deezer to listen to the tapes.

Kim Janssen

In the past three years Kim Janssen traveled around the world. Solo, with his 25-headed Major Cities orchestra or with his other band The Black Atlantic he traveled across Europe, North of America, Great Britain and also Asia for more than 400 shows. In all these years and at all these places he worked on his second album ‘Ancient Crime’.

Inspired by his years on a boarding school in Asia ‘Ancient Crime’ is a concept album that takes place in an old idyllic school, in a remote village in north-west England during the winter. A mixture of history, myth, memories, old and new verses and arrangements.

Most of the album was also recorded during the journey. Janssen recorded the Oriel Quartett from Marla Hansen (famous from The National and Sufjan Stevens) in Berlin. A drum set in an abandoned factory in Groningen, an organ in Almere, and the magnificent organ from the Catharina church in Utrecht with the renowned 100-headed Toonkunst choir.

The album got a lot of positive reactions, led to a TV performance on Dutch television program ‘De Wereld Draait Door’ and many shows in the Netherlands and Germany.

HiFi is the joint residency of Patrice Bäumel and I at TrouwAmsterdam. It's a night that flirts with Indie, Electronica, Disco & Techno. I tried to reflect this in a 2 hour mix-tape! Enjoy!

244 Embryonic Journey

by The Cosmic Carnival

From the Cosmic to the Carnival. These songs tell our story from the very beginning up until where we are right now. Deep grooves and addictive drums, with a bit of reggae here and there. Blistering solos, and some psychedelic flavours. And there's this thing we have with harmony singing. No ‘80s or ’90s songs on this one, mate... The good stuff's timeless. Enjoy this fine selection wherever you are, whenever you want. Peace!

Music to listen to the day after a night out; a playlist for the day light - beautiful arrangements, down tempo and partly bitter sweet songs.

226 The Installation

by Unruly Gallery

When installing shows at Unruly Gallery, we usually have a few cold Warsteiners, have a laugh and discuss art – including music. For this Mixed-Tape list I selected a few songs we discussed and played over the last year; a somewhat eclectic mix, including chansons, rock classics, pop and even contemporary hip hop.
